REGISTRATION IS CLOSED! If you had registered for the event by March 25, 2017, and sent a check for the event we will contact you on the details for the burn.

We have scheduled our annual Prairie Burn of our Flint Hill pastures on Saturday, April 1, 2017.  The rain-out date is Saturday, April 8, 2017.

The event will start at 1:00 PM.  The afternoon starts with tours of the 1865 Homestead Ranch which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  This includes: the 3-story stone house, 2-story tenant house, 3-story stone barn, and the root cellar with a hand dug well.  Take in the natural surrounding beauty of the Flint Hills while relaxing on the banks of Mill Creek, watching the crystal-clear water meander downstream.  See more of the Flint Hills on the hayrack rides provided in the afternoon, taking you out across a Mill Creek crossing and through the meadows.

At approximately 4:00 PM, there will be speakers to tell you the history of the ranch, now the Claussen Ranch, and orientation about the Prairie Burn, safety items, etc.  There will be snacks and drinks available.

The Daytime Burn will begin with a short walk by the family cemetery onward to the pasture.  After the Prairie Burn, we will return to the barn for our famous BBQ and fixin’s, followed by dessert.  There will be live music provided after the meal.  After the meal and music, we will proceed on a short walk to the Night Time Burn.  After returning from the Night Time Burn, we will have a campfire on the banks of Mill Creek.

Outdoor clothing (you might want to dress in “layers”).  Cotton shirts and jeans work well.   Wear leather boots or leather shoes.  Bring leather gloves, and a garden rake if you wish to pull the “fire line” (the rake needs to have steel teeth).  Bring a good flashlight or a headlight.  Other items that are helpful are a bandana / face cover and eye protection.  A “must” is your camera to capture the flames.  With the old-growth grass, we may have flames shooting up thirty or more feet.

The cost is $90.00 per person and includes all the above.  You will need to book the event by March 25, 2017 by calling 785-765-3300 or by email at prairieflames@millcreeklodgevollandpoint.com.

We can house 29 people at the Lodge.  There are 9 private bedrooms in the guesthouse.  There is also the tenant house and the bunkhouse in the barn.  Please see our website for more information on our accommodations ( http://millcreeklodgevollandpoint.com/category/rooms/ ).
